The Bradford West Gwillimbury Minor hockey association reached out to all teams looking for support for a Christmas ‘adopt a family’ initiative. I presented the idea to our team and everyone was super excited! The idea was for our team to adopt a family and purchase their Christmas wish list items to be delivered at a local charity held Christmas dinner. The families noted on the wish list are those that use our local food and clothing banks. Our team was given a single mom and 3 kids. When I saw the wish list items I was overwhelmed and thought there was no way our small team of 16 could get it done. The gifts cost approximately $600 combined and I honestly thought it was unattainable. In any case, we had signed up to help so I put the challenge out to the team. Within hours of putting the challenge out, we had one of our Dad’s, a business owner say he wanted to fund the whole amount! Well this act inspired a whole team of kindness and willingness to help. So much so that we had to ask for more people to adopt! In the end we adopted 8 individuals and the gifts purchased were well over the initial $600. It was truly an act of kindness and team togetherness at Christmas. Local businesses and all of the team families worked together on an amazing act of kindness. Each family had their gifts to shop for from warm pjs, original Nintendo system and games, a crib, diapers and wipes, cleaning supplies, LOL dolls, Paw Patrol toys, to a Christmas tree and decorations, gift cards, snow suits and boots. We all came together for a wrap it up day where the team and their families worked to wrap the donated gifts. We arranged with the organization to pick up the gifts and we literally filled an entire mini-van. Working together as a team in this way brought us closer and really is the true meaning of Christmas. We hope that you will all consider our team for this great initiative!
